Jesus Affirms the 10 Commandments
Over the last few weeks we have covered the 10 Commandments as given to Moses in the Old Testament. As the 10 Commandments for life are excellent guidelines for living for all times – Jesus affirms the original 10 Commandments in the New Testament. Let’s take a look at Matthew 22:37-39 and Matthew 19:18-19.
Matthew 22:37-39
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Matthew 19:18-19
18 Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,
19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
In Matthew 22:37-39, Jesus summarizes all of the Commandments by making two statements. Jesus speaks directly to our relationships with one another in Matthew 19:18-19 .
As we love God and other people our lives please God. Notice God does not say we have the option to refocus our love onto plant life or wild life or any other creation in nature. The Commandments specifically call us to love God and love other people. It does not matter what race or religion or other differences – we are called to love one another.
The entire Bible is our guidebook for life. No better place to start our faith walk or to improve our walk with God than with the 10 Commandments. They give order to our spiritual lives and our natural lives. The 10 Commandments are a guide of how to organize society as well as any other organization.
Isn’t God good? We thank you Father for teaching us how to live this life You have given to each one of us!
