 The Stone

In Joshua 10 a stone was placed at the mouth of a cave to capture 5 kings.

Joshua said,

“Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it for to keep them”

 Joshua 10:18

In this case the kings were captured, slain and buried in that same cave. They never escaped their burial place because they opposed God’s plan.

There was another time a stone was placed over the opening of a cave. You may recall this event.

59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth

60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulcher and departed.

Matthew 27:60

 So they went and made the sepulcher secure, sealing the stone and setting up a watch.

Matthew 27:66

 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for the angel of the Lord descended from Heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door and sat upon it.

Matthew 28:2

Apparently, it was customary to secure a cave with a large stone to prevent escape or tampering with the contents of the cave. In Joshua’s case his purpose was accomplished. The kings leading the fight against Israel were captured, killed, and remained in their graves in that cave.

However, when Jesus was laid in a borrowed tomb which was secured with a large stone and guards so no one would steal his body, the expectation was for Jesus to remain in that cave. Can you imagine the surprise on the face of the guards and all of the people who knew Jesus when the stone was rolled away? His body was not stolen. Jesus walked out of the cave! Not only was the stone rolled away – but Jesus appeared to his people alive and well!  Ohh what a time even thinking about the love of Jesus!! I mean death would not and could not hold him down!! Are there any believers today?

For God so loved the world he gave his only begotten son, whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life! Do you believe him today? Death did not stop Jesus from fulfilling his purpose in life and we are linked up with Jesus! He is the overcomer! This is a signal to us not to allow anything to stop us from living the promise of God in our lives. If God be for us who can be against us? We are overcomers in Jesus name!
